Death Scene Cleanup Bills - Reasonable or Outrageous?
At the most vulnerable times in their lives, some families are receiving bills for $20,000, $30,000, $40,000 or higher for the clean-up of a death. Excessive charges by service providers are often denied by insurance companies leaving devastated homeowners at risk for losing their homes. Feeling desperate is common when you lose a loved one to suicide, murder or unattended death. Remember that a few simple steps may keep you from being victimized by companies charging unreasonably inflated prices. Ask a less emotional family member or trusted friend to help you find an experienced, trusted service provider. Keep in mind that a nice looking web site does not necessarily mean the individual arriving at your home can be trusted or know what they are doing. Always get the scope of services and the cost in writing before you sign anything. If you accept a price list in lieu of a total price, you may receive a very high bill. Any experienced, reputable company coming into your home should be able to tell you what the cost of the clean-up will be before you hire them. Remember, a lien can be placed against your home by unpaid services providers in most States. Take care of yourself first, and then hire someone to take care of your property.
Remember -- when you are faced with a devastating loss:
- Have a less emotional family member or trusted friend help you negotiate for the clean-up.
- Get the Scope of Work and total price in writing before you sign anything.
- Don't accept a price list, open ended items, or variables in the price in-lieu of a total cost.
- Remember, a lien or a law suit may result if the wrong company is hired.
- Take care of yourself and get counseling to help you through the rough days.
